Tobacco Cessation Expansion - 1/1/2024
Walgreens is opting into our tobacco cessation program. With this, there will be an incentive where members must participate in Vida in order to remove the tobacco surcharge from their monthly medical premiums.
Walgreens to branch out to 2 paying orgs
Walgreens
- Member is enrolled in the BCBSIL or UnitedHealthcare Copay or HSA plans, excluding the BCBSIL myVirtualCare Access plan
Walgreens - Tobacco Cessation (VP Card Linked)
- Member is not enrolled in the BCBSIL or UnitedHealthcare Copay or HSA plans
- All WAG employees on medical plan will be on the “Walgreens- tobacco cessation” eligibility file so anyone who uses tobacco can enroll, even if they are not eligible for Vida under the regular Walgreens pay org. If member is eligible for regular Walgreens pay org, enroll them there.
Incentive Overview
Requirement
- Members are required to complete 2 coach consults over a 2 month period (do not have to be consecutive)
- Members must be in the Quit Smoking program or have quit smoking as active behavior within Whole Health
- Quit Smoking can be a secondary program, and many members may want to enroll in a different program offered, then have this program added
Reward
- Tobacco surcharge from their monthly medical premiums
- Communicated via weekly file sent to Alight
- Annual surcharge is $750, split between each paycheck, so the incentive reward is significant
How do members participate?
Non-Vida eligible member
- Members select separate paying org (e.g. “Walgreens - tobacco program”) at onboarding
Vida eligible - existing user
- Member would inform their coach that they are a smoker and want to participate in the Quit Smoking program
- Tobacco cessation added as secondary program for coaching members
- For members in Whole Health, RD sets quit smoking as active behavior
- Only one active behavior at a time therefore all other sequenced program content will pause
Vida eligible - new user
- Member can choose ‘Quit Smoking’ program at onboarding
- OR member chooses other program and informs their coach that they are a smoker and want to participate in the Quit Smoking program
- Quit smoking added as secondary program
- For members in Whole Health, RD sets quit smoking as active behavior
NRT Redemption Codes
Members are given unique codes via content card to purchase NRT products.
- Members cannot place orders with these codes for delivery, this only works for in-store purchases or pick-up.
- If a member is trying to place an order for pickup, the system will require them to make a $10 purchase.
- The codes only work on these products.
- If members have issues with their codes, they can contact the Walgreens Benefits Support Center at 855-564-6153. Reps are available to assist Team-Members Mon-Fri 8AM-5PM CST.
- UPDATE:
- The codes that were provided to your team at the end of 2024, should run though 12/31/2025.
- If it were a code provided in 2024, but the participant didn’t attempt to use them until 2025, then they could be expired and should be issued a new one. Or, if they’ve already been redeemed, then they won’t work again.
- Participants are offered two free nicotine replacement treatment (NRT) products, gum or patches (this is in the materials we provided to you and part of our implementation discussions). As long as they don’t try and get more than two, they should not be expired.

Additional Info:
Mental Health Value Model (MH value model) - Most members will enroll into a physical health program during onboarding, although Mental Health Group Coaching will also be available. For the vast majority of members that enroll into a physical health program, they will later be placed into a mental health program based on their PHQ/GAD (depression/anxiety) scores and health goals. Members will start with the mental health program appropriate for their current PHQ/GAD level (broken down in the table screenshot). The program will be added manually through a flow created/executed by the Product Operations team.
Then every 6 weeks, the clinical team will analyze how the members are doing. They will utilize a "Step Up" and "Step Down" model, where every 6 weeks, members will be put in the appropriate mental health program based on their PHQ/GAD scores. After 6 weeks in that program, their PHQ/GAD will be re-assessed, and that assessment will guide the member’s transition to various MH programs. If their mental health acuity increases, they will be “Stepped Up” / offered Mental Health Prescribing, Therapy, or additional mental health enhanced content, wherever best fit to support the member and their needs. If a member instead shows improvement to their PHQ/GAD levels during this assessment, they will be “Stepped Down” / offered a less intensely focused mental health program. THIS IS FOR WALGREENS MEMBERS ONLY AT LAUNCH.
